Summary: The rescue of historical documents of the Brazilian military dictatorship provided, in large part, by the Truth Commission CNV) throughout the country, allowed several actions to be promoted in favor of this theme. In line with the indications of the Truth Commission, the Federal University of Espírito Santo (Ufes) carried out several surveys on documentation from that period in various departments and revealed a large mass of documentation that needs specialized treatment. The photographs of the Rectors of Ufes are an example of this context. As a question of this research, therefore, the need arises to describe and represent the subjects present in the photographs through metadata, which are efficient to qualify data, promote access, recovery and preservation. For this research, the Dublin Core metadata standard was chosen, which is a metadata standard commonly used to describe digital items. Therefore, a research question arises related to: how can the subject category of the Dublin Core standard contribute to the thematic representation of iconographic objects from historical and archival collections? The objective is, therefore, to propose a metadata modeling, based on the Dublin Core standard in order to organize and thematically represent the photographic collection of the Ufes Rectors from 1964 to 1985. To answer the research question, a survey bibliography, in research databases, was carried out in order to capture knowledge about metadata and metadata standards, as well
as knowledge related to the thematic representation of information. Basic
elements of the metadata standard are used in a sample of photographs from the aforementioned collection and their occurrences are discussed. It is pointed out that the thematic representation is important for the qualification of subjects and can be allied to projects related to the defense of memory, truth and justice, as well as being able to promote knowledge about the context of the photographs and, by expanding points of access, it is possible that the democratization of access to these collections will take place.
